A HYALITE MORNING

Bozeman, Montana

Story by HONEST LINES December 8th, 2014

THE ALPINE START

Even with Hyalite’s close proximity to Bozeman (20 minutes to the Reservoir) and the short approach to G1 (15 minutes) it’s worth getting up early to tackle the steep classic ice wall. Easily top-roped and super fun, we were the first group to the wall and threw down a few ropes, swapping between routes on perfectly plastic ice. Orrin and Luke were first up, each taking a route as I rappelled and shot from the side. I quickly dispatched a fun line, surprising myself how good it felt as the first climb of the season, and then belayed Dan up a little mixed route to the side.

Folks started showing up—the weather was too perfect to blame them—and with the rest of Saturday’s to-do list looming, we packed up and headed down, satisfied with the results of an early morning head start.
