Documenting the process and journey of a project can often be just as rewarding as producing and completing the actual thing. There’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes to make a commercial come to life, and while it can sometimes be tedious and time-consuming, it can also become a fascinating subject in and of itself. My role as a creative director has enabled me to participate at various levels in the creation and production of a good handful of television spots, and shedding some light into what goes into the creative process is one of my favorite chores.
Our latest efforts took us to the Mountain Sky Guest Ranch in southwestern Montana’s aptly named Paradise Valley. We started early and started shooting high above the valley near a small herd of cattle before moving back down to the ranch and getting the details wrapped up. Not a super long day, but a decidedly photogenic one with a small crew, beautiful landscapes, and a couple of well-behaved horses.
